Contest Task 2007

The task of the International MULTICOMFORT HOUSE STUDENT CONTEST 2007 was to design a detached house for one family. The choice of location was unrestricted, although the house should take a favorable passive-house form and be suited to its surrounding natural and cultural environment.

Particular emphasis should be placed on feasibility and thus also on effective constructional and cost-efficient solutions. In addition, social and ecological aspects of living should be elaborated by means of coupling and/ or grouping the basic design of the house.

1. Details of the task in 2007

The choice of location is completely unrestricted. The property can be chosen freely and must be represented on a site plan. For the purpose of better illustration, the property or the surrounding natural and cultural environment should be photographed (the site for construction needs not to be real in the legal sense).

Space allocation:
A detached, one-family house should be designed by using the passive-house construction method; the house should accommodate a family of 4 persons (2 adults and 2 children). It should also be suited to its natural and cultural surrounding environment. Particular emphasis should be placed on feasibility, which in turn requires effective constructional and cost-efficient solutions.

In addition to the design of a detached, one-family house, proposals may be made regarding the coupling or grouping of several houses, which would offer a better social and ecological quality.

Room allocation:
Residential building for a family of 4 persons: usable area of 120-150m2 (excluding stairs)
Storage rooms and/ or cellar: 60-80 m2 in total
Parking area for 1 car and 4 bicycles
Creation of a specially designed external space (e.g. terrace, yard, etc.)

2. Type of construction, technical parameters:

Technical parameters for thermal insulation:
The exterior structural components should have the following U-values:
U-value for all opaque external structural components U ≤ 0.15 W/(m2K)
U-value for windows and doors U Wtotal ≤ 0.8 W/(m2K)
In the case of very small volumes or a poor surface-to-volume ratio, the opaque structural components should have an U-value of up to 0.1 W/(m2K).

Protection against overheating in summer:
The planning should include sufficient external protection from the sun for the east-, south-and west-facing windows.

Technical parameters for fire protection:
Fire protection requirements for structural components:  The fire protection should meet national standards.

Technical parameters for soundproofing:
Sufficient soundproofing should also be taken into consideration with regard to the quality of living, especially because the focus is on a detached house.  
Exterior walls and roof - protection against air-borne noise: Rw ≥55 dB
Protection against air-borne noise between apartments: Rw ≥63 dB
Interior walls - protection against air-borne noise: Rw ≥48 dB
Foot-fall soundproofing for ceilings: Lnt,w ≤ 45 dB

In practice, sufficient soundproofing for windows and doors, as well as for sanitary installation and ventilation systems, should be taken into consideration.

3. Competition requirements:
Type of construction, technical parameters
In order to meet the passive-house standards, the high-performance heat insulation constructions should be employed. On the other hand, principles of energy-optimized buildings should also be taken into consideration.

Basically, the construction method (static system, wood, mineral or steel construction) can be chosen freely, whereby ISOVER products should be employed in the process. ISOVER shall provide free planning assistance in the form of a CD containing the construction details and sample constructions, as well as a brochure about passive houses; both will be supplied together with the submission invitations.

In addition, the following may also be submitted:
Description of the construction or assembly process, with particular emphasis on the building's air tightness
Presentation of the possibilities for coupling or terracing the detached house - formation of a compact development structure
Additional ecological installations, e.g. active use of solar energy, etc.
Use of rainwater for watering gardens and toilet flushing
